Sponsored by Rocky Mountain Snow Guards, the contest seeks out unique projects using snow retention products in captivating ways. This is the second year in a row that Umbrella Roofing has won an award in the competition.
"We knew this roofing project was a winner right from the start," says Alexander Wilmore, production project superintendent for Umbrella Roofing out of Eagle, CO. "Anytime you have a DaVinci Roofscapes® synthetic shake roof with a Rocky Mountain Snow Guards snow retention system, it's a winner to us here at Umbrella Roofing.
"This particular project comes down to location, color blend, and layout. The Aged Cedar color of the DaVinci® Select Shake series always has a way of making the snow guards really 'pop' and stand out. The layout of the house, with all its dormers, valleys, hips and ridges, really gave us a chance to showcase our installation capabilities for both composite roofing and snow retention systems."
Insurance Savings
The homeowner decided to replace his real cedar shake roof as a preemptive way to protect his home and to reduce his homeowner's insurance premiums.
"Insurance is difficult to obtain for real cedar shake roofing," says Baker. "We decided to invest now in composite roofing and take advantage of the insurance discounts. State Farm® immediately offered us about 27% off our yearly bills. We may get even more than that in the future.
"There's also the peace of mind we now have with a low-maintenance synthetic roofing product. Plus, the Class A fire resistance of the resilient DaVinci composite roof makes this a smart investment.

Relying on RG16s
Specialists in residential and commercial roofing from Aspen to Vail, and all communities in between, Umbrella Roofing has used snow retention materials from Rocky Mountain Snow Guards for more than a dozen years. One of their preferred products, the RG16, is a 16-inch long metal snow guard designed for installation on new natural and synthetic slate and shake roofs.
"We as a company, and myself in particular, have full faith and trust in the RG16 product," says Josh Yandle, co-owner of Umbrella Roofing. "We've installed countless projects with RG16s. I have yet to see an RG16 bend, break, or fail on a properly installed system."
For the winning project, the Umbrella Roofing team installed the RG16 snow guards in a soldier row pattern on the Baker home. "This works well because it breaks up the snow and ice so it melts evenly and reduces areas from building up with sliding snow," says Yandle. "It keeps everything from coming down all at once. Ultimately, the snow retention system stops large, heavy avalanches from coming down and potentially hurting people or property."
